Yaggie comes out firing as Breckenridge routs Ottertail Central, 42-16

Cooper Yaggie said before the season that he felt like a completely different player. Well, he showed plenty of the same flash, complimenting Breckenridge's signature run game with deep passes down field and accounting for 224 total yards and two touchdowns in a 42-16 win at Ottertail Central.

OTC struck first, busting loose for 70-yards on a auarterback keeper, scoring on their first play of the night for an 8-0 lead. The Cowboys responded by using their Swiss Army knife, Jacob Vizenor, as Yaggie found the speedy senior on an out route that went 35-yards for a touchdown. The dynamic duo would later connect for an 80-yard bomb down the middle of the field, which Vizenor briefly bobbled before splitting two defenders and trotting in for the go-ahead touchdown.

Vizenor finished with 2 receptions for 115 yards before injuring his shoulder on a would-be return touchdown. The senior was primarily used at tailback last year, but frequently lined up at wideout in this one.

Yaggie (10 att. 110 yds) gashed the Bulldogs on designed runs, leading Breck into the redzone before they took a 21-8 lead late in the first half after a three-yard touchdown plunge by Daniel Erlandson. OTC responded with a drive into Cowboy territory, before Reese Pederson forced a fumble inside the five-yard line which was recovered by Erlandson to maintain a two-score lead at the half.

The second half was highlighted by several explosive runs from Michigan native and Breckenridge senior Christian Nieto. He amassed 95 yards on 10 carries, including a 41-yard scamper finished off by a showtime juke move. After rushing for seven touchdowns last year, Nieto hit pay dirt twice in the 2020 season opener.

The offensive line trio of Connor Twidwell, Gavin Johnson, and Ben Krump won the line of scrimmage all night. Krump showed noticeable improvement and opened up some canyon-sized gaps for Breck's run game near the goal line. Breckenridge also bottled up the Bulldogs on special teams, led by the quick coverage of Jayce Werner, Alex Martel, and James Mertes.

Breckenridge is scheduled for a long voyage to Roseau on Thursday, with a 3 p.m. kickoff against an 0-1 Rams team.
