The boys JV game was hotly contested from wire-to-wire. Breckenridge led 40-39 at the half after a Landon Blaufuss tip-in at the buzzer. Wahpeton’s biggest lead in the second half was 12, but the Cowboys made a fierce comeback led by the late game heroics of Collin Roberts. He buried a three to make the score 81-80, then converted a 3-PT play down low to cut the Huskies deficit again to 86-83 in the final moments.
It was Jack Johnson’s second-half defense that spurred the Cowboy comeback. He picked up four fouls in the first 18 minutes, but played nearly the entire second half without one, fouling out with hardly any time remaining. His late-game steal set up Roberts’ big three. Jacob Berndt buried a clutch three for Wahpeton with one minute remaining. When the dust settled, Wahpeton escaped with an 89-84 win led by Ethan Manock’s four 3-PT makes in the first half.
Wahpeton came out firing in the varsity boys game, jumping out to a 31-18 lead behind a handful of stop-and-pop threes from Jaxon Berndt and Bridger Hansen. The latter made six shots from beyond the arc for 20 points, as Wahpeton converted 14 threes at a 56% clip.
Breckenridge cut the lead to six at the half, chipping away at a 16-point deficit behind the dicing drives of Cooper Yaggie. He finished with a game-high 24 points. Adam Ohm sank two timely threes before the half, adding two more in the second half as Breckenridge desperately tried to throw water on the white hot Huskies. Anthony Conzemius took protecting the rim personal, rising up for a two-handed block of Munezero Desire, one his five swats in the contest. Desire and his teammates went right back outside, as Tyler Tollefsen joined the three-point party to put the Cowboys away for good with a final score of 84-76. Just when the Cowboys' prospects started dwindling, Anderson found a cutting Junior Perez for his first basket of the game. It was a big one, putting Breckenridge up 55-54 with 1:39 remaining. Barnesville answered with a three, but Perez forced a 5-second violation with 26.7 seconds remaining down 57-55.
Breckenridge turned the ball over, but Barnesville missed the front end of a one-and-one and Anderson grabbed the board. The Cowboys advanced the ball, but threw it away to the Trojans near the Breckenridge bench. Barnesville was out of bounds. With 3.8 seconds left in regulation, Yaggie quickly lobbed the inbound pass over a leaping Tonsfeldt and into the hands of Christensen. With his back to the basket, he faded to his left and let it fly, catching just enough of the backboard to sink the jumper and send the game into overtime tied at 57-57. Anderson wasted no time in the extra period, driving to the bucket for a runner that put Breckenridge up 59-57. Anthony Conzemius played very limited minutes, as he found himself in foul trouble. When he returned in overtime, he rose up for a shot over Kaden Zenzen that extended the lead to 61-57. He also recorded a big block to protect the lead. After a Zenzen layup made the score 61-59. Anderson grabbed it, but traveled as the buzzer went off. The officials placed .8 on the clock. Yaggie batted the ensuing Tonsfeldt inbound pass into the air, but the clock never started. With the basketball traveling upward, clearly more than a second elapsed before it touched the ground. Bizarrely, the officials placed .4 back on the clock. Barnesville inbounded the ball to the short corner, where a quick shot attempt hit the side of the backboard and the clock read zero. Anderson spiked the basketball and Breckenridge moved to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in section play. Yaggie led all scorers with 22 points, viciously attacking the cup while scoring nearly all of his points in the lane. Christensen posted 13 points and 8 rebounds, shooting 5/5 from 2-PT range. Perez recorded 4 assists and 3 steals from the point guard position. The Breckenridge Cowboys Wrestling Team prevailed in two barn-burner duels against Wadena-Deer Creek and Ortonville this past week. The team first traveled to Glyndon on Tuesday, January 19, for duals against WDC and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and were home on Thursday to face off against Ortonville and Ottertail Central. Even with the short turnaround and lingering injuries, the team wrestled very well with a multitude of wrestlers picking up wins. Tuesday. To open up the evening, Breckenridge defeated section rival WDC by a score of 39-30. Making the difference for the Cowboys was seventh grader David Erlandson who controlled the bout against his senior opponent at 138 lbs. en route to a 6-0 decision. “We asked seventh graders, Henry Slettedahl and David to step into the varsity lineup to help the team. They did just that," Haire said. "Henry went out against WDC’s best wrestler to hold him to that spot, so that we could get the best match-up for David. Henry had no fear and David came up clutch.” Also picking up key bonus points in the dual were Aidan Ruddy and Grant Davis who won by pin. The dual was sealed with Wyatt Differding and Daniel Erlandson winning by forfeit at 220 and 285 lbs. In the second dual of the night, the Cowboys fell to a very tough DGF team 69-12. Bright spots for the team included hard fought pins by Matt Noll at 106 and Aidan Ruddy at 152. In the Junior Varsity matches, David Erlandson and Henry Slettedahl showed heart as they both were able to come out on top of close matches by the scores of 7-5 and 9-5. They also each picked up a pin to close out the night. Thursday – January 21 – Ortonville/OTC In the first dual of the season in front of the home crowd, the Breckenridge Cowboys knew they had to put on their best performances to defeat the Ortonville Trojans. Kicking off the dual at 106 lbs., Matt Noll did his part by winning a 4-1 decision to improve his record to 5-0. Keeping the momentum going at 132 pounds, sophomore Alex Martel came up with a huge win in a back-and-forth battle with a tough opponent. Martel drove a half nelson early in the 3rd period to secure the pin. “I’m so happy for Alex. This is only his second year of wrestling, so he’s taken his beatings. To continue to bounce back after tough losses and perform like he did tonight against a good wrestler says a lot about him. His match tonight was the difference maker," Haire said. Doing what was needed for the team, seventh graders Henry Slettedahl and David Erlandson stepped up and fought hard at 138 and 145 pounds in their first home varsity matches. Wrestling up at 170 pounds, freshman Grant Davis made quick work of his rival with a first period fall which cut the team deficit to 28-27. A forfeit at 182 lbs. gave the visiting team a 34-27 lead with just two matches left in the dual. Wyatt Differding stepped up at 220 lbs. with a huge pin to cut the Trojan lead to just one. Senior Daniel Erlandson secured the 39-34 team win for the Cowboys with a pin of his own at 285 lbs. “Wyatt and Daniel are team captains (along with Aidan Ruddy). Day in and day out they lead this team. It was great to see them finish off the dual the way they did," Haire said. Although the grapplers dropped their second dual of the night to a strong OTC team 58-22, they came away victorious in five-of-six wrestled matches, including a pin by Riley Kappes in an exhibition match to start things out. Matt Noll and Alex Martel wasted no time picking up their second wins of the night with first period falls. “Riley, Matt, and Alex push each other in the wrestling room. Their work ethic and attitudes are second to none. It showed on the mat tonight," Haire said. DGF had no interest in pounding the rock inside. The Cowgirls constantly trapped the Rebel ball handlers, forcing turnovers that speedy guard Carcie Materi turned into easy transition scores. She finished with eight points and a game-high four steals.
The Cowgirls were led by identical stat lines of 20 points and 6 assists from Held and Conzemius. Johnson caught fire in the second-half for 13 points, including a coast-to-coast layup and a circus shot on the baseline that dropped through the net as she fell to the floor.
